Devastated children of tragic Edinburgh student nurse thank funeral fundraisers

The grieving children of nurse Angella Naggayi have thanked donors after a fundraiser for their mother's funeral costs hit its target in hours.

Tragic Angella, 42, passed away from coronavirus, leaving behind her two young children Annmarie Yiga, 12, and John Jeremiah Mugisha, 8.

A student nurse at Edinburgh Napier University, Angella had also been working in community care when she contracted the virus.

After slipping into a coma two weeks ago, Angella named her next of kin from her hospital bed as she had no family in the UK.

In the wake of her death, a fundraiser was launched by the Ubuntu Womans Shelter, to help bury Angella back in Uganda, as well as help her children adjust to life without her.

Earlier this week, Edinburgh Live reported that around £4,000 had been raised of the £10,000, however in just a few hours the target was smashed, with over £22,000 now donated.

Reacting to the news, the Ubuntu Woman Shelter, told the Scottish Sun:

"On behalf of the children, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and have been astounded by how much has been raised in the past 48 hours.

Working as a single mum in Edinburgh, she has left behind her two adoring children (Go Fund Me)

"The wider community in Glasgow, including the children’s school, as well as people from across the world have continued to show their ongoing support and we cannot thank you enough.

"Angella left her children with a friend, a single mother with two children of her own.

"We have been supporting her for a couple of months.

"Angella entrusted the care of her children to this friend and named her as next of kin.

"She has talked to the council and registered the death, and we are awaiting the release of her death certificate. We are continuing to support her and the children through this difficult time.

"We have also been in constant communication with Angella’s family, her church groups and the Ugandan community in Glasgow, London, Ireland and Canada to develop the GoFundMe page and arrange how the funds can be used in the best interest of the children.

"We have spoken to Angella’s priest in the local church who is making the funeral arrangements to repatriate the body and arrange funeral rites.

"This is estimated to cost £6000.

"The remaining money will be transferred to a trust fund in the name of the children."
