'Devastated' Charlie Mulgrew opens up on pain of Scotland stars after Russia mauling

Shattered Charlie Mulgrew has lambasted Scotland 's inability to do the basics after the team fell to a 4-0 defeat in Russia.

The Scots defended resolutely for 57 minutes before their resistance was broken by a brilliant volley from Artem Dzyuba.

The Russians then took the game by the scruff of the neck and added three more.

Goals fron Magomed Ozdoyev, Aleksander Golovin and a second from Dzyuba ended the Scot's hopes of a result in stark fashion.

And Mulgrew was disappointed that Steve Clarke 's men failed to respond to going a goal behind and started to make silly errors in their play.

He told Sky Sports: "For the first 60 minutes we were in the game. It was 0-0 and in the 59th minute we concede a poor goal from a set piece. They then score a good one from outside the box and and it's up hill from there.

"We are gutted, devastated and we need to get a move on fast and get onto the next game as quick as we can.

"They have top class players all over the park. They're a top class side.

"We are disappointed we were in the game for 59 minutes and then gave away a bad goal. And then they scored from the edge of the box with a good finish. They are a top quality side and it's one we need to look back on and do things better.

"It's the players responsibility. We were sitting with a game plan and we followed it up until 60 minutes when we were fine and then we didn't do the basics. That's happened a few times now."

Scotland now lie in fifth spot in Group I, behind Cyrus and Kazakhstan.
