Devastated boyfriend of tragic young farmer killed in horror crash pays tribute to his 'angel'

The heartbroken boyfriend of a young farmer killed in a horror crash on the A96 has posted an emotional tribute following her death.

Grant Ireland opened up on the "hardest ever" day after Iona Duncan died in the Aberdeenshire crash just after 7am on Sunday.

Iona's car landed on its roof at the junction with Windyraw, between Huntly and Keith, after colliding with a Volvo which was carrying three men at the time.

Sadly, the 20-year-old could not be saved and passed away at the scene.

Posting an emotional tribute on Facebook , devastated boyfriend Grant wrote: "Words cant describe today's emotions.

"Truly heartbreaking doesn't come close, Iona was tragically taken from us in a car crash.

"She was a completely amazing person inside and out, and I feel privileged to have spent the last few months with her, and call her my girlfriend.

"As days go this has been the hardest ever, I thank everyone for their messages and calls. Heaven certainly has another angel tonight."

Iona, who is described as having "a heart of gold", was just a week from turning 21 - which she planned on celebrating with friends and family on Saturday.

The farm worker from the Botriphnie area of Keith had two brothers, Craig and Christopher Dawson, and sister Kim Turner.

She was brought up on the family farm and went on to gain a qualification in agriculture at the rural college at Craibstone near Aberdeen .

Her parents, Alex and Irene, also paid tribute to the former Keith Grammar School pupil.

In a statement they said: "Iona had been looking forward to moving in with boyfriend Grant and had big plans for the future.

"She had dreams to take on the family business at Easter Corrie.

"Farming was in her blood, that's the only thing you can say - it was in her.

"She loved animals from when she was young – sheep, cattle, everything. It's all she ever wanted to do.

"Quite often when we would go out we would get talking to people, Iona would just get to know them straight away."

Iona was known at farms in Pennan and Orkney for her expert hand during lambing season and at Thainstone mart where she also worked.

She was a music lover who sang and played the guitar, and was well known as one of the presenters on Keith's community radio station where she shared her love for country music under the pseudonym 'the Corrie Quine'.

The three men in the Volvo, two aged 22 and one 48, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Sergeant Andy Ramsay is seeking any information about the two vehicles in the lead-up to the tragedy.

He said: “Our thoughts at this difficult time are with the friends and family of those involved.

“The investigation into the cause of the collision is under way.”

He also appealed for any dash-camera footage of the scene prior or during the incident.
