Devastated art dealer's son, 21, kills himself after split from model girlfriend

The artist boyfriend of an aristocratic model took his own life when their romance hit the rocks, an inquest heard.

A text from society beauty Lady Lola Crichton-Stuart found on Kai Schachter-Rich's phone appeared to show she had ended their relationship - but wanted to remain friends, the hearing was told.

Kai, 21, the son of New York art dealer Kenny Schachter and artist Ilona Rich Schachter, took his own life in London on March 11 this year.

A student at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London, he is believed to have have been living between London and New York at the time.

Following Kai's death, Lady Lola, daughter of the 7th Marquess of Bute, former F1 racer Johnny Dumfries, paid tribute to him on Instagram, describing him as the 'love of her life'.

She wrote: "My heart will always be YOURS, Kai Kai. The love of my life and now my guardian angel forever."

She added: "You touched every single person you met, so deeply. I always wondered how could someone be so good? How did I get so lucky to have you and love you when I did."

Close pal Rafferty Law, 22, son of actors Jude Law and Sadie Frost, wrote eloquently of the loss of his 'friend' and 'brother' before urging followers to speak out about mental health issues.

Lady Lola, who was named one of society magazine Tatler's English Roses, penned a heartbreaking Instagram post remembering Kai, just weeks after sharing a loved-up Valentine's Day photo.

The socialite, who appeared in the February issue of Tatler with her mother Serena Bute, often posted about Kai and thanked him for the 'best year of her life'.

On Valentine's Day Lady Lola wrote: 'Thank u for making me the happiest person in the world & thank u for putting up with me ! i love u forever [sic].'

An inquest at St Pancras Coroner's Court on Wednesday heard that Kai's friend, Jordan Vickers, was told by Lady Lola that she hadn't heard from Kai all day.

She was in Spain at the time, the inquest heard.

After calling and texting, Mr Vickers rang Kai's doorbell. The flat was locked other than a first floor window.

Climbing through the window, he saw Kai hanging with a black leather belt tied into a knot around his neck. He was dressed in baggy clothes.

Jordan said in a statement: "It was a shock.

"I was not aware of any suicidal feelings and I did not think he was acting out of the ordinary."

Jordan called the paramedics who arrived promptly at 10.22pm.

After seeing rigor mortis had set in, the solo paramedic decided resuscitation was futile. He called the death at 10.28pm.

Several members of the police also attended the property in Camden Mews, north London.

The inquest heard police found an empty bottle of whisky and a bag of cannabis, which was seized.

Police Constable Alex Bratterman said he discovered a text sent to Kai's phone that showed Lady Lola had appeared to have ended the relationship, but wanted to remain friends.

Police could not read the entire message or retrieve data from the phone, the inquest heard.

No note was found. It is unknown whether Kai read the text message from Lady Lola.

A toxicology report stated Kai was drunk, but the hearing was told that he was not drunk enough to be incapacitated.

There were also traces of ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis in his body, but the inquest heard he was not high at the time of death.

The inquest heard that Kai was arrested last December for setting fire to objects in his home and had written a suicide note in which he said goodbye to his mother.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Assistant Coroner Sarah Burke said: "It isn't entirely clear why this young man decided to end his life.

"It may have been because of a breakdown of his relationship or by other causes that will remain unknown."

She added: "Kai was a bright man with a bright future.

"It is not only a tragic case that he decided to kill himself, it is tragic that so many members of his friends and family would have helped him if only they knew he was struggling.

"I hope the people in Kai's life think of the sociable young man that he was, and not the way his life ended."

The Rich and Schacter families said in a statement: "Kai's death is a devastating loss, he was a hugely gifted artist with a wonderful spirit and a sense of humour that touched everyone he met.
