Disinfectants should not be injected or consumed under "any circumstances".
That is the message Dettol has had to issue after comments made by Donald Trump at his latest coronavirus briefing.
The US president is facing a backlash after suggesting it would be "interesting to check" whether a disinfectant injection could help combat the virus.
Mr Trump said researchers were looking at the effects of disinfectants on Covid-19. Wondering aloud if they could be injected into people, he added the virus "does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that".
These comments lead cleaning product company Dettol to issue a statement.
They said: "Due to recent speculation and social media activity, RB (the makers of Lysol and Dettol) has been asked whether internal administration of disinfectants may be appropriate for investigation or use as a treatment for coronavirus.
"As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route).
And a Dettol spokesman added: "As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information."
In response to the Mr Trump's comments, William Bryan of the Department of Homeland Security science and technology unit said health officials were not considering such treatment.
