Detroit Pistons' 114-107 loss to OKC shows why guards are so important in today's NBA

DETROIT _ Despite a wide talent gap, the Detroit Pistons' guards tried to keep up with Oklahoma City's awesome point guard trio.

They couldn't.

But Christian Wood nearly did.

Wood continued his stellar season, setting a career-high with 29 points, including 5-for-6 shooting from 3 to help rally the Pistons from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to take the lead before the Thunder prevailed.

OKC scored the final eight points, keyed by a Danilo Gallinari 3-pointer to hold off the pesky Pistons, 114-107, on Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena.

Despite trailing by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, the undermanned Pistons (20-43) used a 16-2 run to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.

But the trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (27 points), Chris Paul (16 points) and Dennis Schroder (23 points) combined for 66 points, more than 10 points more than their combined average.

The Pistons have now lost nine of their past 10 games. The Thunder (38-24) snapped a two-game losing streak, and are sixth in the Western Conference.
