Detroit Lions reportedly received proposal about moving training camp to West Virginia

If stay-at-home restrictions impact their ability to host a regular training camp, the Detroit Lions have another option.

Pro Football Talk reported Tuesday that the Lions are one of two teams to receive a proposal about moving training camp to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, along with the Carolina Panthers.

The Lions declined comment when asked about their plans for camp Wednesday.

Cam Huffman, director of public relations and content for The Greenbrier, said in a statement emailed to the Free Press, "The Greenbrier has been contacted by several NFL teams interested in using The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center, our state-of-the-art football training facility, as part of their contingency plans for Training Camp. No plans are confirmed at this point, but we are hopeful to have NFL teams at The Greenbrier again this summer."

PFT reported that the Panthers are considering relocating camp around the time the Republican National Convention comes to Charlotte, Aug. 24-27.

The Greenbrier, which hosted the New Orleans Saints (2014-16) and Houston Texans (2017-18) for camp in recent years, is seeking another team to host in early August, according to PFT.

The Lions have held training camp at their Allen Park practice facility every year since 2002.

From 1997-01, they used the facilities at Saginaw Valley State, and haven't held camp out of state since 1945, when they went to Assumption College in Windsor.

Asked about the possibility of relocating training camp last spring, Lions president Rod Wood said there had been "no talk about it."

"I think it's logistically a challenge and having now played and practiced against teams on the road (for joint training camp practices), we know what it's like to move your entire operation," Wood said. "So to move it permanently for training camp I think would be more than the benefit you might get from being away that it's not on our radar screen."

The Lions and New England Patriots have discussed holding joint training camp practices this summer, though plans could be scuttled by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lions and Patriots open the preseason against each other, Aug. 13 at Gillette Stadium.
