Determined Dumfries and Galloway couple won't let coroanvirus get in the way of their wedding

Determined Kirsteen Steel and Andrew Michell won’t let coronavirus get in the way of their wedding.

The happy pair were supposed to marry on April 3 with a blessing at Applegarth Church on April 11.

They considered postponing their nuptials as coronavirus started to take hold, but decided at the last minute to bring it forward instead.

They’ll now tie the knot at Lockerbie Town Hall tomorrow.

But the wedding will need to go ahead without most of their nearest and dearest.

Kirsteen, 58, said: “Two of my sisters, one of my sons and Andie’s children won’t be there as they live in London and Australia. But when this is all over, we’ll have a huge celebration together.”

Old friends Kirsteen and Andrew, 65, had known each other for decades before finally getting together after both their first marriages ended. Kirsteen added: “We’d have coped if we’d had to postpone the wedding because we’ve waited 40 years for this - what’s another few months?

“We could see it was looking more and more dubious that the wedding would go ahead but when I decided to take the bull by the horns and phone Lockerbie registry office, they said they had a space on Saturday so we decided to go for it.

“It’s lovely to have something happy to look forward to.

“There will only be around six of us there. We originally had 70 guests coming from all over including Italy and France for the ceremony and a ceilidh.

“It’s hard to get your head around what’s happening now, and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to coming out of this tunnel and resuming normal life before too long.”
