'Deteriorating' health provision sees waiting times rocket

The ‘deteriorating’ state of healthcare in Sefton is seeing waiting times rocket.

Targets for patients waiting six weeks for treatment has been in “steady decline” for the past 12 months, meaning fewer and fewer patients receive timely treatment for a range of conditions.

The ambulance service in the borough is also buckling under the strain, with a “deteriorating position” which is described as a “system issue and not localised” according to a report produced ahead of a Sefton council meeting to be held tomorrow.

In the report, which provides a performance update for the main providers commissioned by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside in Sefton, the scale of some of the borough’s healthcare issues is revealed.

This includes issues around increases in demand for services, which has gone up by 20% compared with pre-pandemic levels.

According to the report there are also “fluctuating levels of recovery” among patients, which adds to the ongoing pressures on services.

In 15 out of 20 “key performance areas” the service has scored below target. This includes waiting times for ambulances, cancer treatment and access to mental health services.

In the report, produced by NHS Merseyside and Cheshire, it states that measures are being taken to improve waiting times for services with the provider “increasing capacity with additional agency staff, overtime,
and progress of trainee to qualification.”

The report is due to be discussed at a meeting of Sefton Council’s adult social care and health overview and scrutiny commitee, which is being held at Bootle Town Hall tomorrow (October 18) at 6.30pm.
