Detectives still looking for answers one week on from Meadow Well attack

A week after Meadow Well was awakened by fire and screaming, police probing a brutal attack on a taxi driver are yet to make a breakthrough.

The driver's skull was fractured by three weapon-wielding thugs who then torched his car, fleeing into the night with his takings in what residents described as an "evil act".

Last Wednesday, residents woke to find a police cordon and blood stains on Weyhill Avenue where the 28-year-old was attacked.

Police incident in North Shields

Inspector Judith Scott, of Northumbria Police speaking after the attack, said: “We will take robust action against those found to be involved and a team of detectives are now carrying out an investigation to locate those responsible."

She appealed for witnesses to come forward while the police presence around Meadow Well was beefed up in the immediate aftermath.

A few hundred yards away, a scorched road was all that remained after the taxi was set on fire following the gang's getaway.

Addressing the state of the investigation, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Enquiries are ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 18 260619 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
