Detectives spark appeal as Saltcoats pensioner, 86, robbed in her own home by con men

Police are continuing enquiries following a bogus workman incident in Saltcoats this week.

Between the hours of 1pm and 1.30pm on Tuesday, a man conned his way into the home of an 86-year-old woman in Argyle Road, Saltcoats.

He pretended he was a workman and needed to check amenities within her home.

As this man distracted the elderly lady, it is believed that an accomplice entered the property and stole a three-figure sum of cash.

The suspect is described as white, aged between 35 and 45, around 5 ft 9 in, with a stocky build and he spoke with a local accent.

He was wearing a dark green coloured clothing, top, trousers and baseball cap.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and are reviewing CCTV footage for any additional footage.

At this time, there is no information on the second person who entered the house and stole the money.

Detective Constable Michael Grant said: “I am appealing for people in the area to think back and consider if they saw this man, perhaps hanging around in Argyle Road, did you notice him in his green clothing?

"Any small piece of information could prove vital in our enquiries and help us find this man who has targeted an elderly woman in her home.

"He clearly has no conscience and doesn’t care what damage or hurt he is causing.

"I would also like to ask everyone to be extra vigilant and report anything or anyone they think is suspicious.”

Anyone with information is asked to call CID officers at Saltcoats Police Station via 101, quoting incident number 2539 of 13 August 2019. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
