Detectives investigate claims women were "injected" at Newcastle venues

A Facebook post shared widely Sunday claimed up to six women had been "injected" with a substance while attending venues in Newcastle in recent weeks.

Newcastle detectives are investigating claims at least three women were "injected" with a substance while attending venues in Newcastle in the past week.

Police have commenced inquiries, and were awaiting toxicology reports Monday, after one woman attended Gosford Hospital after reportedly leaving a King Street venue feeling unwell in the early hours of Saturday, December 4.

A further two women have come forward to police reporting similar incidents after attending two licensed premises in Newcastle and Hamilton at the weekend, police said.

Meanwhile, a social media post shared prolifically on Sunday night claimed as many as six women had reported similar experiences in Newcastle in recent weeks. The post alleged that the user had been "injected" with "some sort of insulin needle or epipen" while attending King Street Hotel in Newcastle West on Friday night.

In a statement Monday afternoon, the hotel said it had been made aware of the post and "have worked throughout the day with Newcastle Police".

"King Street has been operating in Newcastle for over 20 years and every week the safety of our patrons is our top priority. We are part of our community and we will continue to be here for our patrons," the hotel said.

Police have urged anyone who may have any information or may wish to report an incident to detectives to contact Newcastle Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
