Detectives hunt source of 'cannabis sweets' after 13 students at Catholic school taken to hospital

Police were working to identify the origin of cannabis-laced sweets which put 13 students at a top Catholic school in hospital.

The female pupils at La Sainte Union Catholic School in Highgate, north London, fell ill yesterday morning after eating the sweets, believed to have contained THC, during morning break.

Some are thought to have spent the night at a hospital in Barnet although none were “seriously unwell”.

The Standard understands that the sweets came from a bright green pouch marked "super potent formula" Nerd Rope Bites, decorated to look like the packaging for the popular children's chews.

Earlier this year, police in Norfolk warned: "Counterfeit packets of sweets packaged to look like Nerd ropes, but which state they contain cannabis and a high amount of THC... were being sold for £12."

A spokesman for the school in Highgate said: “The students became ill after eating what they believed were sweets. The contents of what the students ate and how they came into possession of them is being investigated by the police.”

Police and London Ambulance Service attended the school shortly before noon following reports children who returned to class had become unwell.

In a letter to parents seen by MailOnline, headteacher Sophie Fegan wrote: “Once your daughter has recovered, I will need her to tell us how she came into possession of the ‘sweets’ and what she thought they were.

“I am sure you will be asking her these questions too: it would be most helpful if you would ask your daughter to prepare a written statement for me.

“We already know the name of the student who brought the sweets in, but we need to know more about how and why they were shared.”

The Met said the pupils were taken to hospital “as a precaution” and that no arrests had been made.
