Detectives appeal for witnesses after 15-year-old boy shot in south Manchester

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a 15-year-old boy was shot in south Manchester. The teen is in hospital following the shooting on Salutation Street in Hulme on Wednesday night.

Police say his injuries are 'not thought to be life threatening'. Five minutes earlier a 19-year-old man was seriously injured in what's believed to be stabbing about half a mile away on Avenham Close.

Officers believe the two incidents are linked. A 14-year-old boy arrested in connection with both attacks has been released on bail pending further investigation.

Det Supt David Meeney of GMP’s City of Manchester district said: "I would like to reassure the community in Hulme that we are continuing our enquiries in regard to both of these incidents and leaving no stone unturned. We fully understand that the local community are shocked by these incidents and as a result will continue to provide visible reassurance the area in the form of on-foot patrol officers, vehicle patrols and covert patrols.

"Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate violence of any form and we will continue to work together with partners to achieve this. Weapons of any kind can cause serious injuries but the use of a firearm is particularly concerning and GMP is committed to tackling the use of firearms in our communities.

"We are continuing to appeal for further information in regards to these incidents. I am particularly keen if there is any mobile phone or dashcam footage of the incident or its immediate aftermath."

Witnesses told the Manchester Evening News they saw a knife and machete lying in the street following the attack on Avenham Close. One resident said he saw a young man 'bleeding'.

He added: "It looked like he had a stab wound on his left-hand side, near his armpit or something."

Neighbours on Salutation Street described seeing the 15-year-old moments after he had been attacked. "There was just a guy running around," the man said.

"He was bleeding, he had a cut to his hand. The guy had been attacked." His son added: "It was a truly horrific sight. I just don't know how to feel."

Multiple police cordsons were in place across Hulme following the two attacks. A section 60 order giving police enhanced stop and search powers was also put in place until Friday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call on 101 quoting the reference number 3388 of May 17. Footage can be uploaded to the GMP website here.
