Detective suspended after drugs go missing from evidence room

A detective from Queensland's State Crime Command has been stood down over allegations he stole a dangerous drug from an evidence room on the Gold Coast, the ABC can reveal.

The ABC understands the Detective Senior Constable is from the Major and Organised Crime Squad and the drug in question is cocaine.

He allegedly carried out the theft last year, but has only just been suspended.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has told the ABC the officer is now the subject of an Ethical Standards Command investigation into allegations of stealing and unlawful possession of a dangerous drug.

The QPS refused to confirm if the drug in question was cocaine and if the officer was from the Major and Organised Crime Squad.

The ABC has been told that the drug was allegedly taken out of a bag seized by the squad during a raid on the Gold Coast last year.

It was only discovered that some of the contents were missing when the bag was weighed.

The ABC understands the Queensland Police Union is assisting the detective in the matter.
