Details on what Covid-19 restrictions will lift and two rules that will remain as Ireland draws closer to 'Freedom Day'

Ireland is edging closer it’s very own freedom day as the country remains on track for the Government to lift all remaining legal Covid-19 restrictions on October 22.

Tanáiste Leo Varadkar has recently said restrictions on the hospitality industry will be lifted and people can go back to ordering and drinking at the bar from this date.

It will also mark the end of the use of the Covid-19 vaccine passes for entry into bars and restaurants but it’s to remain for international travel.

Nightclubs, which have been closed for almost 20 months will reopen their doors and the legal requirement for social distancing will be lifted.

The cap on numbers allowed to attend weddings and funerals will also be lifted.

The Chief Medical Officer has recently issued an update on the latest situation with Covid-19 in Ireland ahead of the easing of restrictions in three weeks' time.

Dr Tony Holohan said that while there have been "encouraging indicators" recently, we still need to be vigilant as we enter the colder winter months.

The top public health official urged people to avail of the Covid vaccine if they have not yet done so.

"As we move into the time of year where the weather isn't going to be as good and being out and about all of the time is a bit more difficult, it’s important that we continue to be mindful of the public health advice," he said.

"Vaccination remains our best means of protection against #COVID19.

“There are still some people who haven’t yet taken up the opportunity of vaccination, or who have delayed receiving a second dose for various reasons.

"I strongly encourage anyone who is in this position to ensure they get fully vaccinated as soon as possible in order to best protect themselves and those around them."

The next and final stage according to the Government will see the majority of restrictions lifted and replaced by guidance and advice.

From 22 October onwards final restrictions will be lifted, including:

  • requirements for physical distancing

  • requirements for mask wearing outdoors and in indoor private settings

  • limits on numbers at indoor and outdoor events and activities

  • restrictions on religious or civil ceremonies

  • limits on numbers that can meet in private homes/gardens

  • certification of vaccination, immunity or testing as a prerequisite for access to, or engagement in, any activities or events (with the exception of international travel)

  • restrictions on high-risk activities (for example: nightclubs)

Measures that will remain in place include:

  • self-isolation when we have symptoms

  • mask wearing in healthcare settings, indoor retail and on public transport
