Details of woman's tragic death revealed after house fire in Edwinstowe

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning about the use of portable heaters after a 63-year-old woman died in a house fire.

Fire crews and police officers were called to an address on Birkland Drive, Edwinstowe, at around 3.30pm on February 5.

Fire crews from Edwinstowe, Warsop and Worksop were called out to the scene of the incident. The police and the East Midlands Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team also attended.

Officials later confirmed a woman had died after the fire at her home.

An inquest into the death of Janis Wightman was held on Monday, June 29.

Assistant Coroner, Gordon Clow, stated Mrs Wightman died after an accidental fire at her home.

Mr Clow stated that Mrs Wightman’s death was the tragic consequence of the accidental ignition of her clothing or other combustible items nearby to a halogen heater she was using in her property.

Mr Gordon Clow said: “This is a tragic case and I share my condolences with Mrs Wightman’s friends and family.”

Following the inquest, Lucie Poxon, from the Fire Investigation Team at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, spoke out about the case.

She said: “We would recommend that if using a portable heater within the home, to ensure you have working smoke detection and that any portable heaters are suitably placed so that they cannot fall or be knocked over, not in close proximity to clothing or combustible items such as clothing or furniture and that they are not damaged and well maintained”.

“Our thoughts are with Mrs Janis Wightman’s family and friends after this tragic event.”
