Details of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's private chat with Anthony Martial emerge

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has held private talks with Anthony Martial in a bid to restore the Manchester United striker's confidence.

Martial has been far from at his best this season, and has struggled to compete with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood for game time.

But last time out against Aston Villa the Frenchman got himself on the scoresheet as Manchester United ran out 2-1 winners to move second in the Premier League.

And it seems that Solskjaer's one on one conversations with Martial have started to pay dividends for the forward.

Solskjaer said: "We've had some chats, of course. We have spoken about last season and how important he was for us then and he is going to be important for us this season.

"Player's form is temporary but when you have got class that is permanent.

"I think he has proven he is class. Now he is getting fitter and fitter and that means he is going to get better and better."

Martial suffered an injury back in December in United's clash with West Ham, but it is his confidence - not a lingering health problem - that has been holding him back.

Solskjaer added: "Anthony is going to improve. He's going to be better and better. He's had a few chances this season.

"He's still creating chances, he's just not had that little bit of luck, margins in front of goal. They'll come. We saw a better version of Anthony tonight. A more confident one."

Will Solskjaer still be Man Utd boss come the end of the season? Have your say here.
