Details emerge on Anthony Castonzo’s contract extension

The Indianapolis Colts locked up a big priority in left tackle Anthony Castonzo on Sunday, signing him to a two-year extension worth $33 million.

The deal is a strong one for both sides. Castonzo gets a nice payday—one that makes him the highest-paid left tackle in the league—while the Colts get a bargain on a short-term deal.

Some of those details have been released by Over The Cap. Castonzo’s guaranteed money sits at $17 million, and it all comes in 2020. Here’s a breakdown of Castonzo’s two-year deal:

So by looking at this, Castonzo’s contratct is pretty straight forward. He takes on a $17 million salary cap hit for 2020, which comes in the form of his base salary ($7 million) and roster bonus ($10 million)—all of which is guaranteed on the fifth day of the new league year (March 22).

The rest of his contract, the remaining $16 million isn’t guaranteed. He has a $6 million roster bonus due in 2021 with a base salary of $10 million. He also has a $500,000 incentive each year for Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors.

Regardless, the Colts aren’t going to cut Castonzo unless something drastic happens during what will likely be his final season in the league in 2021. Even so, this is a favorable deal for the Colts.

Castonzo has turned into one of the most consistent left tackles in the league, and the Colts were able to give him a strong deal that was above market without tying them down in terms of cap hits.
