Progress does not stand still, and every year manufacturer’s work on improving new technologies, making the process more and more convenient and environmentally friendly.
Thus, in 2010 the technology "eSIM" appeared on the market. Initially, however, it was called "Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC)". Large enterprises and travelers were the first to pay attention to the international eSIM, because it allowed them to avoid huge expenses when using communication and internet abroad. Find out from our article what it is, the differences from a physical SIM card and how it can be useful today.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is an embedded chip in a device that functions like a regular SIM card. This is why its full name is "embedded SIM." The chip is integrated during the manufacturing of smartphones, tablets, and watches. All that is required to use an eSIM is to scan a special QR code and activate it in the settings.
Additionally, an international eSIM can work simultaneously with a plastic SIM card, allowing calls and SMS to be received on both SIMs at the same time.
How is an International eSIM Different from a Plastic SIM?
An international eSIM can be activated online, so you don't need to remove the old SIM card from your phone and insert a new one. If you want to switch operators or get another number, you can simply switch it in your device's settings. Otherwise, this eSIM works like a regular plastic SIM card. Even if your phone has only one slot, you can still use the eSIM simultaneously with a plastic SIM card.
When Can an International eSIM Be Useful?
An international eSIM can be used both as a primary and a secondary SIM card. You can choose several operators and switch between them without changing your home contact. Here are some situations where an eSIM can be useful:
- Separate personal life from work. An eSIM can be turned on and off whenever you want, making it suitable as a work SIM card. This way, colleagues won't disturb you outside of working hours. You can also link a separate account in Telegram and other messengers to the eSIM, so personal messages don't mix with business ones.
- Stay connected without data roaming fee. You can activate an eSIM for any country online and use it as needed. This helps you avoid high fees for international roaming while staying connected.
- When you don't want to reveal your phone number. Often, after registering on websites, you start receiving promotional SMS that are difficult or impossible to unsubscribe from. In such cases, an eSIM is suitable: if you disable it, SMS won't bother you.
How Does an International eSIM Work Abroad?
Outside your country, an eSIM will have the same capabilities as a regular plastic SIM card. You can configure the eSIM settings in advance in the provider's app or website: choose packages of minutes and gigabytes or enable additional options.
One of the main advantages of an eSIM is that you can activate it in advance and turn it on upon arrival. This way, you get access to fast and uninterrupted internet as soon as you arrive at the airport, without paying tens of dollars for international data roaming.
Which Devices Support eSIM Technology?
eSIM is supported by iOS and Android smartphones, some tablets, and smartwatches. If you want to use an eSIM, check if the new device supports it before purchasing:
- On iOS: Go to "Settings" → "Cellular" → "Add eSIM." If this option is available, your phone supports eSIM.
- On Android: Go to "Network" → "Wi-Fi and Internet" → "Mobile Network" or "Cellular", and find "SIM card and mobile network". If eSIM is listed in this menu, your phone supports it.
However, you can simply ask a consultant for this information or find a list of supported devices online.
