Destiny 2’s Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion has everything but actual Jedi and Sith, and it looks like a big-budget fanfiction

When Bungie announced earlier this year that Destiny 2 would be having a Star Wars-themed expansion, I had no idea what it meant. Now I know what it means, and I don't know how to feel.

In a livestream today, Bungie showed off Destiny 2: Renegades, which is being described as an "homage" and "love letter" to Star Wars. It's got a new weapon called the Praxic Blade, which is basically just a lightsaber, and another pistol archetype called a Blaster. But it doesn't end there.

It's got a new "lawless frontier" for players to explore, including a Mos Eisley-like bar, tasking Guardians with working within the criminal underworld to gain power and try to topple a new Cabal empire that's fully equipped with soldiers that look like Stormtroopers.

And it looks like the Drifter has been frozen in carbonite. And the Cabal have walking tanks that look like an AT-AT. Not only that, but the game's existing locations are being tweaked and updated to look like Star Wars stuff. Europa will look like Hoth, Mars has death pits similar to Sarlacc Pits, and more.

Yeah, I really don't know what's going on here. It's like a Star Wars fanfiction that's been made canon within the Destiny universe. Like, a big, Lucasfilm-flavored content drop. I can't tell if it's awesome or just too weird to enjoy.

One part of me says, "Hey, this is Star Wars, it's cool stuff, let's use lightsabers to slice up Vex." Another part of me says, "What the hell is this Disney ad in Destiny?" It sticks out like a sore thumb and just feels weird, and I can't shake that feeling. I'm conflicted, but right now, I feel more icky than excited for it. But hey! Bungie said the DLC will be adding more vault space, so there's that.

I've completely fallen off the Destiny 2 train since finishing The Edge of Fate. And looking at the game on Steam Charts, I'm not alone. I really don't know if Renegades will bring players back, but I think it might just, out of morbid curiosity alone, perhaps.

The same can't be said for today's Ash & Iron "major update," which is more focused on quality of life stuff than big additional content, and so I will keep my finger on the pulse of the community to see what players are thinking and saying ahead of Renegades' launch later this year.

Destiny 2: Renegades launches on Dec. 2.
