Destiny 2’s new activity gives you terrible loot unless you launch it from the Portal

Destiny 2 is clearly pushing players toward the Portal interface, and a bug makes it doubly true for the Heavy Metal event. Due to a glitch, launching the activity from the Tower node drops obsolete gear, with new loot only available through the Portal, the studio confirmed today.

"We're investigating issues where launching Heavy Metal from the Tower node drops blue gear and older legendary gear," Bungie posted on its official channels. "Until we can disable the node, we recommend launching the activity from the Portal."

Hovering over the activity through the Portal shows the intended loot, including any bonus drops and activity completion rewards. You can find this specific node by clicking the Event Hub on the bottom left of the Portal, then going to the Play Now tab.

This week marks the first appearance of the Heavy Metal mode in The Edge of Fate, which added the Portal as a mainstay feature. When it was around last season, you could only launch the PvP activity from the Tower's special event node, so clicking on the mode through the Tower may have inherited some of those legacy rewards. The studio plans to disable this node.

The Portal has dominated the game with The Edge of Fate, becoming the only way to effectively level your power. Most activities not tied to it aren't as rewarding since they still drop legacy gear not adapted to the tier system. The Desert Perpetual is the exception, though the quality of its rewards has also drawn negative attention from players since its release.

The Heavy Metal event pits players against each other in teams of Brigs vs. Tanks, and it's only around for a week, disappearing with the release of Ash & Iron next Tuesday. You have a limited time to get the event's unique drops, such as the Synanceia sword with access to Eager Edge and the Trachinus Rapid-Fire Slug Frame shotgun. Just make sure to launch it through the Portal; otherwise, your rewards won't be worth the time you've put into a match.
