Destiny 2 breaks 160,000 Steam players with day one of Monument of Triumph update

Destiny 2 surpassed 160,000 players on Steam after the release of the final live service update, beating both of the last expansions.

Monument of Triumph is the final content update for Destiny 2, released on June 9. The update brings multiple changes we have been asking for, including tiered gear for all raids and dungeons, the deprecation of the Portal, SRL, and more. This return to form brought many Guardians back, with Steam numbers peaking at 167,867, according to SteamDB.

These numbers well exceed peaks of the last two expansions: The Edge of Fate and Renegades. The Edge of Fate peaked at 108,534 players, but introduced the controversial Portal. The following Star Wars-themed expansion, Renegades, only reached 71,278 players. These numbers only include Steam, which should account for roughly a third of the playerbase, bringing the total peak closer to 400,000, as indicated by popularity.report.

The update launch put the Destiny 2 servers to the test, with Weasel errors plaguing the game for the first few hours. Once you get into the game and get acquainted with Distortions through a new quest, there’s plenty for you to do and grind for.

Almost every activity has new and reprised weapons, from Black Armory arsenal to the return of iconic guns like The Palindrome and Steelfeather Repeater. The community has also begun discovering reopened locations on destinations, like Niobe Labs and The Dark Forest in the EDZ.

At the monument in the Tower, there are four statues of Guardian Tenets. These are tied to the update’s Triumph section and progression. Complete different objectives, like clearing dungeons or finding POIs on planets, to earn Legendary Marks. You can then exchange the Marks for multiple cosmetic rewards, including over 15 armor ornament sets per class.

The update is massive, with many agreeing they would pay for a content drop like this. Moreover, with its release, Destiny 2 reached the top two best sellers on Steam. That is to say, there’s a strong interest in Destiny IP, and while this may be the last update for Destiny 2, the traction hopefully won’t let Sony put it to rest for good.
