Despite struggles, late injury, Cardinals still have faith in K Zane Gonzalez

Arizona Cardinals kicker Zane Gonzalez entered the season coming off a fantastic 2019 campaign. However, 2020 was not his year. He struggled on clucth kicks and kicks in general in range of 40-49 yards. He injured his back and was placed on injured reserve to end the year and now will enter free agency.

Kliff Kingsbury never wavered in his public support of Gonzalez during the season and continued to show faith in him even as the offseason begins. Kingsbury didn’t close the door on his potential return.

“As far as the kicker, we’ve said all along we like Zane, have a lot of faith in Zane and we’re still evaluating all things moving forward,” he told reporters on Monday.

Playing the season on a second-round restricted free agent tender that paid him more than $3 million, it would be unlikely if he returned for that amount. The team already signed Brett Maher to a futures deal for next season. He spent the last couple of weeks of the season on the practice squad and kicked two seasons for the Dallas Cowboys.

What the Cardinals decide to do at that position will be one of the important questions to be answered during the offseason.
