Despite declining past offer, Karl Albrektsson saw Bellator 231 as perfect opportunity

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – It’s finally time.

That’s at least according to one of the newest additions to Bellator’s light heavyweight roster, Karl Albrektsson.

At Bellator 231, Albrektsson (9-2 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) faces former light heavyweight champ Phil Davis (20-5 MMA, 7-2 BMMA) in the card’s co-main event.

The 26-year-old Swedish fighter has talked with Bellator in the past and had declined previous offers. However, after he picked up a win at RIZIN 15 in April, he felt ready to pursue the next jump in his MMA career.

“I’m more older and more experienced,” Albrektsson told MMA Junkie at a media day held Thursday. “At the time I was very young when I got the call. I was already (preparing) for a competition, so I had my focus on other stuff. Now, I feel like I’m sure. I’ve faced tough guys already and I’m ready to make the step.”

Albrektsson is taking his fight with Davis seriously. So seriously, in fact, he shaved off his signature golden locks. A new beginning calls for a new hairdo.

“It’s a lot of taking care of and a lot of wrestling,” Albrektsson said. “It gets (very) messy. A lot of shampoo bills. (I’ll) just make it grow out again and look nice.”

Bellator 231 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount and streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.
