The sports world was impressed back in February when Patrick Mahomes showed up to a Kansas City gym and dominated some pickup basketball games. The Chiefs, on the other hand, were not.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach went on Kansas City radio and said that the team immediately called Mahomes’ agent and reiterated that the MVP quarterback was no longer allowed to play basketball. They effectively ended a promising two-sport career.
Well, look away, Chiefs, because Mahomes played basketball on Monday … with Dirk Nowitzki. Ball is life.
Mahomes visited the the Mavericks practice facility and shot around with the future NBA Hall of Famer. Mahomes’ shot could use some work, but we’ll toss that up to rust from his basketball ban.
A football eventually made an appearance.
While Mahomes’ contract bans an array of high-risk activities like hang-gliding, riding motorcycles and skydiving, the basketball ban likely refers to competitive basketball.
He’s not allowed to play pickup basketball games at a gym with strangers, but the Chiefs will probably live with Mahomes bricking a bunch of 3s with Dirk watching and nobody playing defense.
At least, let’s hope the Chiefs were OK with that. If not, he’ll have some explaining to do.
