Despite 3 misses, Pete Carroll standing by Seahawks kicker Jason Myers

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is standing by kicker Jason Myers despite his three missed kicks in the team’s eventual win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On Sunday, the Seahawks marched down the field in the fourth quarter needing only a field goal at the buzzer to beat the Buccaneers. Instead, Myers missed his third kick of the day, a 40-yard field goal attempt that sent the game into overtime.

Myers had also cost Seattle four points earlier in the ballgame, missing his first field goal attempt and an extra point.

Luckily for Myers, quarterback Russell Wilson and the rest of the Seahawks offense found a way to get it done on Sunday, scoring a touchdown in the first possession of overtime to sneak by the Buccaneers 40-34.

“Our kicker Jason Myers, he’s our kicker,” coach Pete Carroll said after the win. “It didn’t go right today for him, but it’s gonna. We’re counting on him to come right back next week and kick the winners and do all the things we need to do. He’s got magnificent talent and today got hard and didn’t work outright.

“But we won anyway, and our guys won for him.”

Myers first signed with Seattle in 2018 but was beat out by Sebastian Janikowski for the starting position. After a Pro Bowl year with the Jets in 2019, Myers re-signed with the Seahawks this March on a four-year, $15.45 million deal.

Now at 7-2 on the year, one the best starts in the franchise’s history, the Seahawks will need a reliable kicker if they are going to make a serious run at the playoffs.

Despite what Carroll said after the game, don’t be surprised if Seattle hosts a kicker or two on a tryout basis before the 49ers matchup next Monday night.
