'Despicable' thug battered woman with dementia before raiding her home

A thug who left a vulnerable woman with dementia seriously injured in a “despicable” attack at her home has been jailed.

Kevin McCallum broke into Barbara Slaven’s home on Hawthornhill Road, Dumbarton, between 1.45am and 2.45am in April last year.

The 42-year-old viciously assaulted the 85-year-old before ransacking her home and making of with a number of items including jewellery.

Barbara was rushed to Royal Alexandra Hospital after she suffered serious head and facial injuries in the assault.

McCallum was sentenced to eight years behind bars for the "despicable" attack (Police Scotland)

McCallum was sentenced to eight years behind bars with three years on licence after he was convicted of robbery and assault.

He appeared for sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday.

Speaking after the court hearing, Detective Constable Iain Allison of Clydebank Police Station slammed the robber.

He said: “This was a despicable act carried out on one of the most vulnerable people in our society who suffers from dementia and was completely helpless to McCallum's actions.

"I would like to thank our colleagues in forensic services who worked tirelessly to analyse DNA samples in a short time frame to enable us to build a case against Kevin McCallum. I would also like to thank the local community for providing us with information.

"Barbara's family asked us to use this photograph of Barbara's injuries to highlight what happened her. I hope the conviction and sentencing will provide some comfort to Barbara and her family."
