'Despicable' thieves swipe £130 from 100-year-old woman after claiming their football had gone into her garden

A man and a woman tricked their way into a 100-year-old woman’s home and stole more than £100 in what police branded a “despicable” crime.

The pair knocked on the door of the victim’s home in Darlington, Durham, at around 6.30pm on Tuesday and said their football had flown into her garden.

The pensioner led the woman – who is described as young-looking and had her hair tied back – through the house while the man waited outside.

It was only later that she realised they had stolen £130 in cash.

Detective Sergeant Jo Godber, from Darlington CID, said: “Burglary is a horrific crime regardless, but to target a 100-year-old woman is simply despicable.

“We are appealing for anyone who has any information that could help our investigation, or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time, to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Durham Police on 101.
