'Despicable' coughing Brazilian president Bolsonaro blasted over anti-lockdown rally

Brazil's president has been blasted after he joined hundreds of protesters at a rally against coronavirus lockdown rules - and coughed repeatedly during his speech.

Jair Bolsonaro was branded "unspeakable" as footage of his appearance circulated online.

The right-ring strongman, previously branded the "Trump of the tropics" has been vocal in his opposition to measures preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Brazil has more coronavirus cases than any other country in Latin America.

Yesterday confirmed cases rose to 38,654 while deaths rose to 2,462.

Sharing footage of the demonstration, health and human rights expert Octavio Luiz Motta Ferraz, of King's College London, wrote: "Bolsonaro cheering (and coughing over) a crowd of supporters calling for a military coup today. Unspeakable."

And popular Brazilian actor and vlogger Felipe Neto wrote: "This man is all the despicable thing that a human being can be."

Bolsonaro branded supporters “patriots” and said they were helping defend individual freedoms that he said are under threat by lockdowns.

These have been put in place by state authorities - a move with the President opposes.

Bolsonaro said: “Everyone in Brazil needs to understand that they are subject to the will of the people."

During his speech he was filmed coughing repeatedly into his hand.

He has repeatedly dismissed the severity of the coronavirus outbreak and criticized social isolation guidelines, arguing that the economic toll will kill more people than the virus.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil's richest and most populous state, Bolsonaro supporters have been demanding that governor Joao Doria resign because he has been a staunch supporter of lockdown measures.

"The people cannot die of hunger," one protester told Reuters.
