Desperate mum left without a kitchen for weeks as council workmen down tools

An irate mum was left without a kitchen for nearly a month after claiming council workmen downed tools in her garden.

Tanya Cochrane, 30, said she feared for her children's health and even came close to leaving her council-owned home in Hull, East Yorkshire.

She said workers left parts and worktops in her garden for three weeks - despite her desperate need for a new kitchen, Hull Live reported .

The mum-of-two complained to Hull City Council about the condition of her property, but said after her old kitchen was gutted, her new units were not installed.

Tanya, 30, said: "They kept saying they didn't have the right part to fit it, and I ring up and I've just been passed around.

"I can't live like this anymore. I just want it fixed so I can actually use my kitchen - it's been like this for three or four weeks now living without a kitchen. It's horrible."

When Hull Live contacted the council for a comment, the work was carried out the same day and the kitchen is now finished.

Tanya and her two young sons moved into the council house in Bransholme hoping to make a fresh start and live a happy life just before Christmas.

She reported damage to Hull City Council soon after moving in, including a two-metre crack in the living room ceiling.

Miss Cochrane said the kitchen was so cold she had to apply masking tape to the cupboard door under the sink to stop a strong draught and slugs creeping in from the outside wall.

Miss Cochrane described how none of the issues had been fixed until earlier this week.

She claimed that whenever workmen came round to fix it, they passed the job on to someone else at the council.

Speaking last month about the problem, Ms Cochrane said: "I have done everything I possibly can. It is frustrating and really stressful.

"It has been nearly two months. No one has said why this has happened, they just say they will fix it eventually but no one has."

She also believes her two sons, Ethan, aged three, and Luke, 10, have been poorly as a direct result of living in the house.

The authority has previously said inspection appointments had been made with Ms Cochrane but that "she failed to attend" them.

A spokeswoman from Hull City Council said: “As agreed with Ms Cochrane, the work to her kitchen was carried out yesterday.”
