A mum says she was forced to tip buckets of sewage from her eighth-floor council flat window due to a plumbing problem that wasn't fixed for two days.
Sigita Jur, from Leeds, scooped water from her bathroom and kitchen sinks and dumped it into her toilet to stop it from spilling onto the floor.
The desperate situation unfolded as wastewater and sewage suddenly began pouring from toilets and sinks in two flats in Wortley Towers at around 5am on Wednesday.
Sigita's neighbour, who lives alone with two young children, had to battle sewage bubbling up from the toilet as well as flooding from two sinks, LeedsLive reports.
Sigita said: "In my flat I had sewage coming in the bathroom and in the kitchen. The toilet at the beginning was blocked but at least nothing was coming out of it.
"In her [neighbour's] apartment, everything was coming out so her bath was full of sewage.
"Everything was coming through the toilet and through the kitchen sink. She didn't even have any chance to clean up and get rid of it, that's why she was using the window.
"I'm not joking, she's on the eighth floor and she had to get rid of the sewage through a window."
Sigita said they contacted Leeds City Council but spent Wednesday and much of Thursday unable to convince officials that the problem was urgent.
Finally, engineers arrived on Thursday afternoon to fix the problem.
Sigita said: "It's just too much.
"[My neighbour] has two kids, a one-year-old and a six-year-old, then she had a C-section so she should not be lifting like that, the sewage through the window, all day and night non-stop.
"I have an elderly mum who has epilepsy and breathing conditions, so we've been dealing with a lot.
"We had to almost scream on every possible way to get something sorted out and to our surprise it's been sorted.
"I'm sorry but it could have been done before without screaming and without causing these issues and without affecting our health."
The council has apologised for taking so long to fix the problem.
A spokesperson said: “Residents at Wortley Towers reported a blockage to the council and we were able to resolve this on Thursday, October 28, in the afternoon; a clean-up operation has followed to ensure that all damage and disturbance caused by the incident is put right.
"We are extremely sorry to all the residents who were effected and have spoken to those directly affected in person to offer our apologies and ensure that the disturbance to their homes has been satisfactorily put right.
"Unfortunately some delays did occur in resolving the blockage. We are reviewing the incident to ensure that we identify any lessons learned.”
