Desperate Edinburgh café owners in last-ditch bid to save Covid hit business

A popular Leith café has issued a desperate cry for help amid a possible permanent closure.

The Walrus café have today issued the plea and seemingly face closure if they do not raise enough money to keep the business open, with the financial implications of Covid finally catching up.

Taking to social media, the café shared a link to their crowd funder page with the caption: "Walrus aid. Here we are people, The Walrus needs you (again) #savethe walrus."

The cryptic message on the crowd funding website doesn't give too much away regarding the severity of the situation as it reads: "We have strived to provide a backdrop for people to feel relaxed enough to ponder beyond the dramas of the current paradigm and express their own creative spirit.

"We now need the help of our dearest patrons and loved ones to be able to take The Walrus to the next level, and continue to serve the necessary ingredients."

However, the Owner of The Walrus, Chris, and his wife Nicola have revealed to Edinburgh Live that they face an uphill battle to keep their doors open: "We have invested everything to keep The Walrus afloat during the pandemic and the aftermath but now we need to keep the wolves away from the door without paying interest or borrowing more."

He reveals the extensive measure that he and his wife are going to in trying to keep the business open.

"My wife and I are currently re-mortgaging to try and save the place and we feel our amazing customers can contribute with a view to free events and contribution to the future of the café."

The café have set a preliminary target of £33,000 on the crowd funder website, which emphasises the financial difficulty that they find themselves in. Chris also commented on the fact that The Walrus done well to survive, having turned down Government help throughout the pandemic.

"We never received any benefits, business grants or council tax relief during Covid."

Despite all of the setbacks that the café have had to suffer, they have still provided a safe space for locals to explore local music talent, art exhibitions and even kids clubs.

Chris also revealed he and his team also had plans for the future in terms of methods to help give something back to the local community: "There are so many things about to happen with mental health groups, meditation classes, sound healing and community workshops."

In less than a day, The Walrus crowd fund has already gathered £140 with Chris and Nicola praying that the Leith community can help them save the day.
