Desperate daughter's bid to fly seriously-ill dad back to the UK from Thailand

A daughter is desperate to fly her bedridden ex-pat dad back home to the UK from Thailand.

Trina Sanders said she and her family are "on a roundabout" trying to re-patriate Peter Thurgood who suffers from chronic renal failure, Parkinson's, CKD and vascular dementia.

The 74-year-old moved to the Asian country 15 years ago, fulfilling a dream of living out his retirement in the sun, reports the Liverpool Echo.

But tragically his life took a turn for the worst when he went into a diabetic coma in October last year and was rushed to hospital.

It was discovered his heart was failing and he needed a pacemaker fitting, leaving his family scrambling to raise £27,000 for the op.

Once the money was sent and paperwork was signed by Trina, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, the pensioner was able to undergo the surgery a few days later.

Trina said she is unsure whether the delay helped to bring on a stroke as well as vascular dementia.

"It [Peter becoming ill] all came completely out of the blue, when his girlfriend, Pong, rang us we were just in shock," she explained.

The operation was deemed a success and her dad began to come out of the coma before he was struck down again.

"We are unsure why all this came on so quick but as care was withheld until funds were paid, this may have caused the stroke and dementia," continued Trina.

Over the last nine months Peter, who is now partially sighted, was looked after by his girlfriend but his needs have now changed.

He now suffers with chronic renal failure, Parkinson's, CKD and vascular dementia.

The 74-year-old who grew up in Braintree, Essex, now suffers with chronic renal failure, Parkinson's, CKD and vascular dementia.

Trina said her dad, originally from Braintree, Essex, can no longer move his right side due to the stroke and "he believes that his right arm and leg belong to someone else who is trying to hurt or kill him".

"So he is hitting his own arm to 'get it away from him'.

"This is making him angry and he doesn’t understand. He is now bed bound. He cannot stand and cries for help all night."

His family are trying to him back to the UK but keep hitting obstacles, said Trina.

"I've contacted the British Embassy who have told me they cannot help, social services can't do anything and I've ran out of places to turn," she explained.

"It's got to the point where we're rapidly running out of money for his care home in Thailand and within the space of five or six weeks they will ask him to leave.

"He has nowhere to go and he needs to be here with me where I can look after him and be with him for the time he has left."

To get Peter back home the family will need to pay for medical repatriation, which has been quoted as costing between £6,820 - £10,231 for a medical escort and £88,923 - £133,385 for an air ambulance.

Due to the amount of money, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the costs.

Trina is also asking for help with the costs of travelling to Thailand and the resultant isolation period before she can collect her dad from his care home and take him to Bangkok airport.

"It would mean the world to us to have him back here and to be able to hug him in his final days," she added.
