Desperate appeal to find vulnerable man who went missing on way to get Covid jab

An urgent appeal has been issued to help find a vulnerable man who went missing after leaving home to get his Covid jab.

Daniel Maxwell was last seen at shops near his home in Bentilee, Staffordshire, where he lives with his parents on Thursday afternoon.

His sister says she is 'inconsolable' as her brother who is known as Danny and has a learning disability, has now been missing for two days.

Debbie Satongar, a teacher, says Daniel was feeling anxious about the vaccine, but had been encouraged to ensure he had the jab by those who knew him.

She said he left home for an appointment at the Bentilee Community Centre, which he did not attend, Staffordshire Live reports.

The 44-year-old was captured on CCTV at Heron Foods (staffordshire-live.co.uk/)

The 44-year-old was captured on CCTV at Heron Foods, off Ubberley Road, wearing an Everlast t-shirt, at around 2.40pm.

He also withdrew £250 from the nearby Co-op around the same time and was last seen turning left down Ubberley Road.

Debbie is worried someone may have forced him to withdraw the cash, the maximum he can take out in a day.

It comes as her family and their community continue to search for Daniel, having checked his bank statements and visited everywhere he has spent cash in the last two months.

Debbie, 38, who is special needs co-ordinator at her school, said: "The situation is just horrendous.

"I go through states of being inconsolable and crying, worrying because of his vulnerability that someone's done something to him; then trying to be positive that he's taken himself off to a hotel, is safe and will be back in a few days.

"I'm in disbelief at how we can live in such a small place and everyone has social media, but no-one's seen him.

"People have just been amazing, though. We've taken his picture to everywhere he's spent money in the last two months and they've all gone out of their way to help.

"They all recognise him, because he always visits the same places. His life's very predictable and follows a set pattern, because he's not able to cope with anything unusual happening."

Daniel cannot live independently and can write his own name, but needs help reading or writing 'pretty much anything else'.

He knows how to withdraw cash, pay for things on his card, catch a bus and likes to go into Hanley.

Debbie said: "Daniel has a very sheltered life - he has no mobile phone or computer and pretty much no friends, other than his colleagues at Kingsland Primary School, in Bucknall, where he works in the kitchen - they take him to the cinema or Bingo if they're going.

"But his main pleasure in life is watching the news - and I think that might be where the problem's started.

"I know he was anxious about getting his Covid jab because of all the conspiracy theories that've been going around.

"People who know him have been encouraging him to get the vaccine so he's protected and I think he's felt under pressure.

"Like a child, he may now be panicking that he's done the wrong thing by missing his jab and be scared to come home."

Anyone with any information that could help find Daniel should call Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 770 of May 27.
