Desmond Amofah: YouTuber known as Etika found dead days after concerning video

YouTuber Desmond Amofah, known online as Etika, has been found dead.

The New York Police Department announced the vlogger‘s death on Tuesday. A representative later confirmed it to The Independent.

Amofah, who was well-known inside the gaming community, had drawn concerns several days prior after sharing a worrying video.

He voiced suicidal thoughts in the clip, which has since been removed by YouTube.

The NYPD had launched an appeal to help find Amofah on 20 June, tweeting: “Have you seen Desmond Amofah aka Etika? He was last heard from 19 June at about 8pm by phone.

“He is 29 years old, approx six feet tall, and 160lbs. He is a known @YouTube blogger and has many people concerned after a recent video.”

Amofah’s behaviour had become concerning over the past few months. Last year, he uploaded pornography on his channel, in what was a clear violation of YouTube’s guidelines.

In April this year, he live-streamed a standoff with police. An NYPD representative told Kotaku at the time that Amofah had been threatening suicide and had a “psych history”.

Fans and other content creators mourned Amofah’s death following the NYPD’s announcement.

The YouTube Creators Twitter account wrote: “We mourn the loss of Etika, a beloved member of our gaming creator community. All of us at YouTube are sending condolences to his loved ones and fans.”
