Today a lot of us will watch as the Tories kick off the next stage of the grubby process which will give us our third prime minister in as many months.
Like millions across the UK, I have watched on in horror as the Tories turned their backs on the issues facing the people of Britain and indulged in more petty infighting for the top job.
I’m almost out of adjectives for this disastrous government. A party that has been found out – and has abandoned every shred of decency to focus on its priority as the economy tanks and people struggle.
And worst of all, it is a party that sees politics as a game to keep power – and they are willing to sacrifice anything and everything in order to keep that.
The Tories are a gift to those who seek to divide us and those who wish to see this country decline. They are a vehicle for delivering inequality and injustice – they have lost all morality.
And for years, the party that has falsely boasted of economic competence and being the party of business has done its best to tank the economy – putting lives and livelihoods on the line.
We know the price that we are paying for Tory failure. Their mistakes have put mortgage payments up by £500 for homeowners.

It’s meant people being even worse off in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis. This shower don’t deserve to remain in government. Changing the prime minister will not stop the rot.
The person at the top isn’t the problem – the party is the problem.
Over 12 years in power and four prime ministers, the Tories have imposed brutal austerity on the UK, slashed public sector pay, run down public services, overseen a disastrous and costly Brexit shambles, unlawfully overruled Parliament and acted with disdain towards the British public.
They have turned Britain into an international punchline – and they have treated you with contempt.
But they have now done something else – something which they did not mean to do. Through their chaos and incompetence, they have united the people of this country.
People across the UK want one thing – change. They feel the need for change across Scotland, in Glasgow, in Inverness and Dundee.
But they also feel it in Liverpool, Bristol, Newcastle and London. The anger at the Tories is felt across these islands – but so is the desire for change and the hope for a better future.
There is a majority for change – and the Labour party, under Sir Keir Starmer, represents that change. It’s time we called an end to this Tory merry-go-round of chaos.
It’s time we called an end to 12 years of failure. That’s why today, I am issuing a challenge to the new prime minister, whoever that is – let’s settle this with a general election.
It’s time that the people had their say and the people will win. The next Labour government will tackle the cost-of-living crisis, deliver a new deal for workers, restore decency to our politics and it will rebuild our international relations.
Labour is ready and waiting to bring this country together – let’s make it happen.
