A major event at the end of January is Bangkok Design Week 2018, hosted by Thailand Creative and Design Centre (TCDC). The citywide event will take place in various locations, and one of the highlights on Jan 28 will be "Chinatown Fair 2018".
The event will be hosted by Soi Nana residents -- the small lane off Chinatown has emerged in the past few years as a cool hangout spot full of galleries, bars, cafés and restaurants. Its emergence also corresponds to the overall shape-shifting of Charoen Krung from an old-fashioned quarter into a so-called creative district, especially since TCDC has moved its headquarters to the General Post Office building.
Chinatown Fair is a creative-focused event that combines arts, architecture and design. It will comprise of a street market, art and design exhibitions and a block party, which will be hosted by the residents of Soi Nana. The neighbourhood's many unique bars and restaurants will also be parts of the fair providing food and drinks. Installation of original art and design works will be displayed throughout the community.
Locating at the edge of Chinatown within the old city, artists and designers started moving into Soi Nana more than a decade ago creating unique working environment that supports each other. The area is now famous for having many bars and restaurants, as well as artist and design studios.
Some of the venues that will participate in the fair include Tep Bar, Patani Studio, Cho Why, Nana Coffee Roasters, El Chiringuito, Project 189 Bangkok and many more.
Bangkok Design Week 2018, of which Chinatown Fair is a part, takes place from Jan 27 to Feb 4, and will take place mostly around Charoen Krung and Klong San areas, with some Sukhumvit venues in the mix. It will feature showcases and exhibitions, a programme of symposium and panel discussions, as well as a business programme to provide opportunities to young designers.
