Designers keep swearing slipcover sofas aren’t going anywhere – I’m not ready to drop $1,000s, but this Nancy Meyers-coded $41 cover just made it into my cart

Sometimes we’re in the mood for irony. Something so ugly it’s chic, or so old it circles back to cool. Hence the return of the slipcover sofa: self-aware, a little nostalgic, and somehow… fabulous. Most of them cost thousands – and I am not ready to commit that hard to this sofa trend just yet – so when I found a $41.08 hack? Just the slipcover, on sale? I immediately added to my cart.

'It’s the marriage of casual and couture – and I’m here for it,' says North Carolina-based interior designer Grey Joyner of Grey Joyner Interiors. 'I think the slipcover’s revival is part of the larger return to people wanting cozy homes,' she continues – large in part why we’re all oogling over Nancy Meyers living rooms. ‘People want homes that feel expressive, layered, and livable,’ Grey adds.

Skeptics will argue that slipcovers give 'sad beach rental', but quite the contrary: according to Grey, they're missing the point of this furniture trend entirely. ‘They’re no longer just “beach house beige”,’ she says. With the right trim, ruffle, or fabric, they can feel wildly personal. ‘You can customize your trim and the ruffle and it really can become anything you’d like it to be.’ And when you’re bored? Swap it out.

Of course, softness invites slouch. The fix, says Grey, is styling. ‘Structured pillows (think knife-edge or box-style), a tailored throw, or even a contrasting bolster’ is the go-to living room furniture formula. ‘I love tossing on a textured throw and cool accent pillows to create that push-pull tension,’ she adds.

That tension (expected form, unexpected styling) is exactly what keeps the look feeling polished. ‘Even if the sofa is slightly rumpled (which adds charm, in my opinion!),’ she notes.

Turns out, the best couch for 2025 might be the one you already own.
