Designer perfume thief had a foul mouth, court told

A judge told a Bedminster man who uttered "horrible" racist slurs to two people that he ought to be ashamed.

Michael Daley used the language when addressing two men at his accommodation, Bristol Crown Court was told.

The 55-year-old, of Avon Leigh Court, pleaded guilty to two racially aggravated public order offences, in breach of a suspended sentence, and two shop thefts.

Judge Michael Longman deferred sentence for three months.

He told Daley: "It was horrible and unnecessary behaviour and you ought, quite frankly, to be ashamed of yourself."

Alec Small, prosecuting via video link, said it was in August last year when Daley was living at Wayland Court, Fishponds, that he addressed a fellow resident with a vile racist term.

He later uttered an equally vile racist term to another man, the court heard.

Daley told police he had no problem with the BME community and he had "a world of mates".

He denied using the racially derogatory terms.

The court heard Daley admitted stealing Diesel perfume worth £231 from Debenhams in Bristol in July 2019.

He also admitted stealing Dolce and Gabbana perfume worth £176 from the same store in July last year, and was apprehended.

When interviewed he said a drug dealer in the Bear Pit claimed Daley owed him money and told him to steal perfume or face bad consequences.

Catherine Spedding, defending via video link, said: "Mr Daley is very clear he is now living a very quiet life, a peaceful life in which he is supported.

"He is medicated for anxiety and depression and he would comply with any order."
