Designer creates face masks with special hole for drinking straw

A US designer has come up with an innovative range of face masks to help wearers shield against viruses while enjoying a refreshing drink.

Ellen Macomber, an artist based in New Orleans, has created a number of face coverings featuring stylish designs and a small hole – just the right size for a straw.

She joins a number of brands and fashion houses switching their production lines to protective gear in the fight against coronavirus.

Ms Macomber told the Standard that her cloth masks, which cost around £25 each ($30), “are not worn to protect you from covid, they are worn to protect other people from your spray when you talk, sneeze, or cough during social distancing”.

The designer explained: “My masks yes have a straw hole, but the hole is covered at all times by an interior flap.

“It's an easier way to participate in hands free social distance drinking.

“Your hands are the dirty things not your straw or glass you are drinking from.”

Ms Macomber said it takes around an hour for to make each mask, meaning she's only been able to make 40 so far.

However, fans can pre-order select models to be mailed to their homes as soon as they're ready.
