Designer bikini which costs £500 mocked for looking like 'wraparound cellophane'

A bikini has gone on sale and it's not for the faint-hearted.

The see-through creation by label Cult Gaia leaves very little to the imagination while denting a big hole in your pocket.

The 'Shalese' two-piece costs £495 and has left fashionistas calling it a piece of wraparound cellophane and saying you could get the same effect by sticking together a few pieces of Sellotape and matchsticks.

Cult Gaia Studio is described online as "a lifestyle brand that creates beautiful heirloom items that will live in your closet forever."

Founded by LA designer Jasmin Hekmat in 2012, it was boosted after celebs including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Beyonce carried its 2016 Ark bamboo bag.

But its tiny see-through bikini is currently getting fashion-spotters hot under the collar, with one describing it as "a monstrosity".

A description of the barely-there swimwear on the brand's UK site reads: "The Shalese Strapless tulle bikini top with tortoise acrylic details. Our first Swim Collaboration with Brazilian designer Adriana Degreas.

This collaboration is a mix of both brands, West Coast Lifestyle and chic Brazilian flair. An ode to tropical surrealism."

Facebookers gave the new bikini a tongue-lashing.

Melanie Rene said: "My boobs would be hanging all over the place, so cute tho."

Kat Howell-Jones replied: "Lol. I was just thinking...after kids, I could use it as a belt cos there's no way my boobs are still up there."

Ellie Gadd said: "It is absolutely ridiculous if anyone buys that lol."

Devon Anthony said: "It's sold out in xs small and large."

Agnieszka Wichrowska admitted: "My body hurts at the sight of this monstrosity."

Wendy Allison said: "If I saw that photo in an exhibition I'd assume it was about power and exploitation in the beauty industry, forcing us to both reveal and constrain our bodies while causing us physical and psychological pain.

"But no, it's just a really expensive way to get sore tits."

Leanne S Clements said: "That's the ugliest thing I've seen in a long time."

And Claudia Palacios joked: "I can do that with sellotape and matchsticks. Half price for group members."
