Design teams shortlisted for Birmingham Smithfield markets building

A shortlist of design teams has been unveiled for a new markets building at the £1.5 billion Smithfield project in Birmingham city centre.

Five teams have been put through to the final judging stage by Lendlease, Birmingham City Council's development partner for the mixed-use scheme on the site of the old Wholesale Markets.

Colander, the company running the design competition for the markets building, said it had received 75 entries from across the world.

Interviews with the stage two finalists will take place in September.

The final five teams are lead by UK practices 5th Studio, David Kohn Architects and Publica Associates, French firm Moreau Kusunoki and the combined pair of London-based ACME and Spanish outfit b720 Fermín Vázquez arquitectos.

The international design competition was launched in June and an appointment is expected by the end of the year.

The wider vision for Smithfield is to create a new destination in the city centre which will have cultural and leisure activities, 2,000 houses, retail markets and space for businesses alongside public realm and transport links.

Work on the markets building is expected to start in spring 2022 and be completed in 2025.
