A national memorial for victims and survivors of institutional child sexual abuse is one step closer, with designers soon able to submit their proposals on how it could look.
The memorial will be on the shores of Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin, with the winning design to be chosen through a competition.
Submissions will be open from April 12 to May 21.
Social Services Minister Anne Ruston said victims and survivors wanted the memorial to be a place of remembrance that honoured them.
"Without the strength of victims and survivors Australia may have never been able to come to terms with the awful truth about the abuse perpetrated in institutions entrusted to care for young Australians," she said.
Construction on the national memorial is expected to begin later this year ahead of completion next year.
The federal government has put $6.7 million towards the project, which was a recommendation from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
