Greg Rutherford, Kelly Holmes and David Weir are not happy with the new Team GB kits for the World Athletics Championships. Rutherford, who has been leading the revolt against the design, says the shirt is “amazing” and “the best kit to compete in material-wise”, but he is disappointed that the design does not feature the union flag. “Well this isn’t right. Where’s the Union Jack!?!?” asked an incredulous Rutherford on his Twitter feed.
The long jumper won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in a shirt that was also criticised for its disrespect to the union flag. Apparently that kit, which was designed by Stella McCartney, did not have enough red in it. Rutherford didn’t seem too worried at the time, but athletes can be a superstitious bunch, with every detail finely tuned to guarantee their success. So, to keep them happy, we are asking our readers to come up with a new, improved design.
If Rutherford needs to wrap himself in a more rousing, patriotic shirt to win in Beijing, you will have to step in and save the hopes of the nation. Send us your alternative designs for Team GB – or your country of choice – via GuardianWitness or by emailing them to gallery@theguardian.com. We will publish the best of your designs in a gallery. Hopefully Rutherford and his fellow competitors will be inspired by your work.
