MUMBAI: Pacer Tushar Deshpande took his third five-wicket haul since he was snubbed by the Mumbai selectors on fitness grounds, while young bat Suryansh Shedge slammed a superb century on Day One of the third Round of the Times Cricket Shield 'A' Division League matches on Tuesday.
At the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana, Deshpande, with figures of 5-31 in 15. 4 overs, combined well with Sylvester D'Souza (2-42) and Minad Manjrekar (3-39) to help BPCL bowl out Mumbai Customs for 177. Bhavin Thakkar (46 not out) and Akshat Jain (26 not out) then ensured that BPCL reached 73 for no loss in 21 overs at stumps.
In the Times Shield so far, Deshpande has been the standout bowlers, taking five wickets in the first game (5-42 against DY Patil 'B'), 10 in the second (including a match winning haul of seven for 34 in the second innings against Air India SC) and then five scalps in the first innings on Tuesday. In between, the 26-year-old, who was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL auction for Rs 20 lakh, took two for 22 in four overs in the Talyarkhan semifinals against CCI.
At the Indian Airlines ground in Kalina, the talented Shedge's quickfire 141 (110b, 22x4, 2x6), along with Siddhesh Lad's unbeaten 97 (78b, 4x11, 4x6) and Atharva Kale's 88 (98b, 13x4), helped Indian Oil race away to 421 for five against Air India. Shedge has played at the Under 14, U-16 and U-19 teams of Mumbai.
