Deshaun Watson pleased with Texans’ plan to upgrade offensive line

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson likes how the organization’s plan to upgrade the offensive line has gone so far in the offseason.

Watson answered questions for the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson at a Boys and Girls Club event and talked about the direction the front office has taken to improve an offensive line that contributed to Watson being sacked 62 times in 2018, the most in the NFL.

“We just find ways to get better,” Watson said. “The front office knows exactly what they want, what they want to do with the organization and what we need to do to try to take that next step. I knew exactly what they were going to do in the draft, and what they want to do in the future.”

Exactly what general manager Brian Gaine did in the 2019 NFL draft was take Alabama State offensive tackle Tytus Howard with the 23rd overall pick in Round 1. Then, in Round 2, the Texans selected Northern Illinois offensive tackle Max Scharping with the 55th overall pick.

Said Watson: “We drafted two young guys who can come in and compete and love football and want to come in and learn. They’re going to have an opportunity to come in and learn from the veteran guys and continue to try to make us better.”

Scharping and Howard will compete with third-year tackle Julién Davenport and second-year tackle Martinas Rankin for a starting spot. The club has veteran Seantrel Henderson penciled in as the starting right tackle. If there aren’t enough tackle spots to go around, it has been intimated by the front office that one of the reasons the club took Howard and Scharping was for their potential position flexibility to play along interior guard spots.
