Deshaun Watson credits Popeye’s spicy chicken sandwiches for play in Texans’ 26-3 win over Jaguars

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson had a secret weapon when it came to overcoming his apparent left eye discomfort, the eight-hour overseas flight to London, and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ pass rush in his team’s 26-3 win Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

NFL Network sideline reporter Melissa Stark asked Watson after the game how his eye was doing, and he had a playful answer.

“Eye is great,” Watson said. “You know, I got some — I’ll tell you the key. The key is it was the Popeye’s spicy chicken sandwiches that I ate this week that helped the eye. So, make sure —”

“That’s a nice little plug,” Stark said.

Watson completed 22-of-28 for 201 yards and two touchdowns and a 120.4 passer rating. The Pro Bowler took just one sack on the afternoon, though arguably any other quarterback would have taken more.

“I just feel like the play is never over,” said Watson. “I’ve got to protect myself for sure. But I just got to make plays and keep this sideline excited and never, ever give up. That’s the biggest thing. Just kind of keep running in there and try to make something happen.”

Whether or not Watson’s playful endorsement has fans running to Popeye’s to make something happen on the chicken sandwiches front remains to be seen. The former 2017 first-round pick will be able to enjoy as many sandwiches as he wants now that the Texans will have their bye week upcoming and a 6-3 record.
