'Deserves to win it' - Arsenal fans delighted as Matteo Guendouzi receives award nomination

Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been named in the 20-man shortlist for the Goldenboy award.

The prestigious award is given to the best player aged 21 or under to be playing in the top European leagues, after an original shortlist was cut down to just 20, Gunedouzi has made the cut after impressing in his first season in the Premier League.

The Frenchman joined Arsenal last summer, joining from French side FC Lorient. He originally joined with the thought that he would join up with the club's development squad, but went onto make 43 first team appearances for the club during 2018/19.

The midfielder has carried on that form this season, becoming one of the key player's in Unai Emery's Arsenal side that currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League table. He has played started all of the Gunners' eight Premier League games this season, playing the full 90 minutes in six of them.

Guendouzi also won Arsenal's player of the month award for September.

The 20-year-old has a lot of competition for the Goldenboy award, including Chelsea's Mason Mount, Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, and Manchester City's Phil Foden.

But Arsenal fans have no doubt as to who should scoop the award ahead of Europe's best young players.

Should the midfielder win the award, he will join the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
