'Deserved to be champions' - Ian Evatt's frustration at Bolton Wanderers not claiming top spot

Ian Evatt felt his Bolton Wanderers side deserved to be League Two champions and bemoaned the '20-game headstart' that the Trotters had awarded rivals in their quest for promotion.

Last Saturday's emphatic 4-1 triumph over Crawley Town secured third spot in the League Two table, just three points adrift of eventual champions Cheltenham Town.

The final day victory was Bolton's 17th since the turn of the year, an astonishing run of form that catapulted them from mid-table mediocrity to the summit, celebrating a successful campaign during Evatt's first season in charge of the club.

And despite his glee at having secured promotion at the first time of asking, his mind is now focused on the League One challenge that lies ahead - although the Wanderers manager was frustrated at not having won the League Two title.

“Preparations were being made for pre-season one minute past five on Saturday - in my head anyway," stated Evatt.

"That’s where I’m at and that’s what I want. I don’t stop here and I don’t want to stop - I want more. In fact, I’m annoyed we haven’t won the league, to be honest.

"I feel we’re the best team and we gave the whole division a 20 game headstart and still got promoted. I’m just more frustrated that we haven’t won the league because I think we deserve to be champions.”
